NEW CHALLENGE

This challenge is now closed out.  I am happy to say that several people correcctly responded that the amounts are equal.  Interestingly, I asked the same question last year, only with salt and pepper (i.e., solids rather than liquids) and no one answered correctly.  Congratulations to Cadet Migliori who was the first to answer.

Here's a new cadet challenge.

You have 10 ounces of water in one glass (A), and 10 ounces of wine in another glass (B). You take one ounce of water from water glass A and put it into wine glass B, stir it, and then take one ounce of the water-wine mixture from B and put it into water glass A. You again have 10 ounces in each glass.

Is the amount of wine in glass A greater than, less than, or equal to, the amount of water in glass B?

The one on the right is water. Trust me, they are both 10 ounces.

This challenge will close out at 0730, Monday, 1 October.  Good luck!

KEEP YOUR EYE UPON THE SPARROW

Congratulations to Cadet Samantha "Little Fish" Migliori for correctly noting that by the time the truck reached the center of the bridge and the sparrow alighted, it (the truck, not the sparrow!) would have burned more than 30 grams of fuel.

Here's a new cadet challenge:

An 18-wheeler is crossing a 4 kilometer bridge that can only support 10,000 kilograms and that's exactly how much the rig weighs. Halfway across the bridge a 30 gram sparrow lands on the cab, but the bridge doesn't collapse. Why not?
This challenge will end at 0730 Monday, 24 September.  The winner will receive a delicious soft drink.

THE POTATO CHALLENGE EXPLAINED

Here's a short explanation of the potato challenge I posed a few days ago.  It makes sense if you think about it.

Initially, there is one pound of non-evaporating potato stuff, or 1% of a 100 pounds. When the water content is 98% of the total weight, 2% will be non-evaporating potato stuff. So 2% of the new weight is still going to equal the initial one pound, since this pound of potato stuff does not evaporate ex hypothesi. 2% of 50 pounds is a pound. So the new weight of the potatoes would be 50 pounds.

"Dogged if I understand, but then again, I am just a plastic potato and I don't have to be college and career ready."

DINING-IN--WHO WILL BE MR. OR MADAM VICE?

The date for our annual dining-in has been announced:  11 October.  The dining-in will be held at the Wallkill Recreation Center from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.  If you've been to a dining-in, you know they're fun, we expect this one to be better than ever.  The program is being developed, but expect the traditional parading of the beef, fines, etc.  We're going to add a couple of new twists just to keep Madam or Mister Vice on his or her toes.  Be there or be square--new cadets are especially welcome!

There will be push ups!

Some will even be correctly performed.

Cadet Barone will not sing this year!

There will be cake, too.

...and general frivolity.  Yippee!

THANKS...

I'd like to offer a special thanks to all the cadets who helped out with various projects over the summer.  With the help of Cadets King, Ferguson, Migliori, Glickman, Fitzgerald, Nyaware, Beebe, Roane, and Rutland, among others, we completed:
  • Annual inventory and reorganization of our uniform stock
  • Ordered new uniforms
  • Received new instructional material
  • Built a knot board as a training aid
  • Redecorated our classroom
  • Validated our JUMS database
  • Assisted in the "Welcome Back" mailing to all parents
  • Created a comprehensive spreadsheet of cadet accomplishments
Overall, cadets provided over 1,000 of service this summer.  BZ!

It was easier than this!

WELCOME BACK CHALLENGE

Congratulations to Cadet Roberto Soriano's brother who provided the correct answer: 50 lbs.  Think about it--carefully.  (Apparently, this is too complex for cadets.)

Here's an easy challenge to help get you back in the swing of being a successful high school student:

Potatoes are 99% water and 1% non-evaporating potato stuff. If you take 100 pounds of potatoes and set them out on your back porch to dry, the water portion starts to evaporate. After awhile, enough water has evaporated so that the potatoes are now 98% water.

If you were to weigh those potatoes when they are 98% water, how much would they weigh?

This challenge will close out at 0730 Friday, 14 September.  The winner will enjoy a delicious soda from our honor mess.  Good luck!  For the future sailors among you, here's a trivia question:  What is lower than a little fish?
