The Little Fish makes a less important point.

NEW CHALLENGE

This challenge is closed.  Cadet Barone would not change his choice.  Many would agree, but the challenge is actually a rewording of the now famous Monty Hall Problem posed in the early 1990's, a puzzle that has provoked much discussion amongst those in the not unrelated fields of probabilistics, decision science, and gambling.  It may be fair to say that there is no general agreement--some parties maintain that there is no reason to change (Barone among them), while others assert that the prudent thing to do is switch one's choice.  As far as I can see, though, you get a fifity-fifty shot of walking home with a goat.  (Unless you don't mind a goat in the back seat of your car.)

Here's a new challenge:
You are a contestant in the NJROTC Game of Life.  You have to choose one of three doors.  Behind the winning door is...a brand new car!  Behind the other two doors are goats.  (If you are still trying to figure this out, you don't want a goat!)  You chose door number two.  The game show host then opens door number one, behind which is a goat, he then asks you if you'd like to change your door choice.
Here's the question:  Is it to you advantage to change?  Explain.
This challenge expires at the welcome back picnic.  Good luck!

FIGURE THE ODDS

How sad!  Once again, I have confounded the Middletown Cadets.  Obviously, the answer must be "A."

Here's the latest cadet challenge:

Cynthia is a college student majoring in finance.  She has always enjoyed numbers, finance, and working with people.  She is also very committed to the environment--she has always loved nature and wants to minimize the negative impact of humans on the planet.  Now here's the question:  In ten years time, when Cynthia is 29, is more likely that she is:
a) A loan officer at a bank.
-or-
b) A loan officer at a bank and a member of the World Wildlife Foundation.

This challenge will close our on Monday, 20 August at 0900.  You must explain your answer.  Good luck

CADET CHALLENGE

Congratulations to the Squeaker, who correctly noted that the puzzle can be solved by adding a decimal point.  Who knew?

How sad is it that cadets are biologically incapbale of solving puzzles in the summertime?  Here's proof positive:

What mathematical symbol can be put between 5 and 9 to get a number bigger than 5 and smaller than 9?

This challenge will close at 0800 Monday, 13 August 2012.  Good luck

WELCOME BACK PICNIC

On Saturday, 25 August we will be hosting a Welcome Back/Welcome Aboard Picnic at Maple Hill Park from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  We'll have refreshments, music, and games.  If you want to swim, it'll cost you $1.00, but everything else is free.  Come on out and start the school year off right!
