CHALLENGES

Watch this space for the end of the year challenge.  The challenge will be published Monday, 13 May.  In the meantime, here is the latest cadet challenge:

Imagine a board with three vertical pegs about 9 inches high.  On one peg is a set of seven nested disks, each with a hole in the center so it will fit on the peg.  The disks are different sizes with the largest on the bottom so as to form a cone with the apex pointed up.  You must transfer the disks to another peg.  You may move only one disk at a time and the largest disk must always be on the bottom.  Questions:

1.  How do you proceed?
2.  What is the minimum number of steps it will take to complete the assignment as directed?
3.  How did you figure this out?
This challenge will expire at 0730, Friday, 10 May.  There will be a prize for the first correct answer arrived at independently. Good luck!
