HERE'S YOUR NEW CADET CHALLENGE--THE FOUR GALLON MEASURE QUANDRY

Congratulations to Cadet Matthew Figueroa who answered with the correct procedure.  Good Job!

Here's the long-awaited New Cadet Challenge.  Read it carefully and make sure you understand exactly what it asks.

The challenge:
You need to fill the sump of a helicopter engine with exactly 4 gallons of 2190 TEP oil.  The trouble is, the only things you have available, aside from the helo itself, is a 200 gallon tank of oil, a 5 gallon can, and a 3 gallon can.   Although you can measure exactly 3 or 5 gallons precisely, you can not “eyeball” or estimate any other amount.  How do measure exactly 4 gallons?

If you under fill the sump, the engine will overhead and the pilot will be forced to ditch at sea.  If you overfill, the gears will be damaged, and the pilot will be forced to ditch at sea.  You must get it exactly right.

There is no trick to this--you can't say, for instance, that you would ask someone to go get you a four gallon can.  You must use common sense and logic.  You must be prepared to explain your solution.  This challenge will expire at 0900 Friday, 29 August.  The winner will be the first new cadet with the correct answer who can then demonstrate a simple series of drill commands and answer a couple of general knowledge questions.  The drill and general knowledge need not be perfect, but the challenge question must be correct. Only new cadets are eligible.  No outside help may be received (you're on your honor).  Good luck!

Maintenance and inspection of the helicopter assigned to the admiral in command of the 7th Fleet.
