NEW CHALLENGE

Congratulations to both Cadets Samantha "Little Fish" Migliori and Robert "Torpedo" Ferguson, both of whom determined that the Spanish ship is going to Port Said and that either the French or the Brazilian ship carries tea. 

Here's a new challenge for those of you who enjoy logic puzzles. 

There are 5 ships in a port:


1. The Greek ship leaves at six and carries coffee.

2. The Ship in the middle has a black chimney.

3. The English ship leaves at nine.

4. The French ship with blue chimney is to the left of a ship that carries coffee.

5. To the right of the ship carrying cocoa is a ship going to Marseille.

6. The Brazilian ship is heading for Manila.

7. Next to the ship carrying rice is a ship with a green chimney.

8. A ship going to Genoa leaves at five.

9. The Spanish ship leaves at seven and is to the right of the ship going to Marseille.

10. The ship with a red chimney goes to Hamburg.

11. Next to the ship leaving at seven is a ship with a white chimney.

12. The ship on the border carries corn.

13. The ship with a black chimney leaves at eight.

14. The ship carrying corn is anchored next to the ship carrying rice.

15. The ship to Hamburg leaves at six.

Now here's the challenge:  Which ship goes to Port Said? Which ship carries tea?

NOT SO AMAZING AFTERALL

Became the XO,
But cannot do trig for carp.
Proof I'm amazing.

I'm not sure why ayone would want to do trig for carp, but I don't understand fishy ways.

NEW CHALLENGE--I FEEL A LITTLE JAPANESE TODAY

As at least one of you (Jessica "Squeaker" Glickman) knows, a haiku is based on syllables, not paragraphs.  Good catch, Jessica!  Thanks.

It's been awhile since I provided a literary challenge.  The responses to such challenges in the past have been poor, so it is with some trepidation, and only because of my naturally optimistic disposition, that I am willing to try again. 

The challenge:  Write a poem based on the traditional Japanese haiku form.  In America this is generally accepted as a 5 syllable line, a 7 syllable line, and a 5 syllable line.  You can read more about the form at:

The successful haiku will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Form
- Creativity
- Connection to NJROTC at Middletown High School

END OF YEAR HAPPINESS!

The end of the year has almost arrived.  Congratulations and warm best wishes to all our graduates--you all have brought much to the program over the last four years and we trust you will look back on your days in the program fondly and in the knowledge that you have touched the lives of others in a positive way. Stop by when you can and be sure to keep in touch.

Farewell and Following Seas to those cadets who are not continuing in the program next year.  To everyone else:  Stand by for heavy rolls while the ship comes about!

Next year we will achieve Distinguished Unit status.  If you will be in the unit, you will be a part of the effort and, ultimately, our success will rest on you.  Plan now on making a real commitment.  Be prepared academically, militarily, and every other way for what will be a most challenging year.  Want to know what we'll be doing?  Check the calendar and goals statement on the Unit Website for details.

NEW CHALLENGE

Congratulations to Cadet Ferguson who correctly solved the puzzle noting that the last bean is white.

Here's an easy one for the XO:  Finish the phrase One Fish, Two Fish, red Fish, Blue _______. 

When you get into Naval Science 4 you will come to understand that I have a predeliction for illustrating concepts with beans.  Here's a challenge for you bean counters who have yet to experience NS 4:

A pot contains 75 white beans and 150 black ones. Next to the pot is a large pile of black beans.


A somewhat demented cook removes the beans from the pot, one at a time, according to the following strange rule: He removes two beans from the pot at random. If at least one of the beans is black, he places it on the bean-pile and drops the other bean, no matter what color, back in the pot. If both beans are white, on the other hand, he discards both of them and removes one black bean from the pile and drops it in the pot.

At each turn of this procedure, the pot has one less bean in it. Eventually, just one bean is left in the pot. What color is it?

THERE'S HOPE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL!

NEW CHALLENGE (EASY!)

Apparently it really was easy.  Cadet Ferguson reported the correct answer:  "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise."  (Middletown cadets often loose on both counts!)  For the record, the XO did not answer correctly.

Here's a challenge even the XO can get.  What does the following passage mean when translated into common language?

He who locks himself into the arms of Morpheus promptly at eventide, and starts the day before it is officially announced by the rising sun, excels in physical fitness, increases his economic assets and celebrates with remarkable efficiency
