NAVY ANNOUNCES THE 2016 GILLIAM AWARD COMPETITION

Every year the Admiral Senn Foundation awards through the NJROTC program an academic award in honor of Joseph C. Gilliam.  Winning the award is a high honor and includes a prize of $1,000.00.  The competition includes a requirement to write an essay.  This year the topic is:

"Describe how being a member of your Navy Junior ROTC class has prepared you to become an active citizen of the United States of today."

Background information:   Current events have created more and more debates about issues such as personal freedoms, immigration, justice, and ethical behavior in the public eye.  NJROTC is a citizenship development program;  how do you think it is affecting you in the development of your being an active citizen for your future?

The essay should highlight examples of positive reinforcement, leadership challenges and goal attainment that are attributable to the lessons learned and experiences of the NJROTC.  Provide details and feel free to use personal experiences and examples in the essay.

The essay should be typewritten, and between 500 and 750 words.  The award amount, if any, will be determined by the Admiral Senn Foundation and will be provided to the selectees from the eleven areas, with acceptable essays.  All cadets are encouraged to submit essays void of incomplete sentences, improper grammar, misspellings, strikeovers, and the like.

See your Naval Science Instructor for details.  Essay inputs will be due 4 January 2016.
